Course structure
This is a Foundational course in quantum computing and quantum sensing, which is open to anyone with a bachelor’s degree in a STEM field and basically need high school level of Physics, Mathematics and Computer science knowledge. You will learn the following:
Module 1: Foundations of Quantum mechanics - This module will be common for both quantum computing and quantum sensing, as these quantum technologies works on the principle of quantum physics. We will cover the history of quantum mechanics from Max plank to Richanrd Feynman and beyond and on this journey you will learn how each one of these greats paved way for the future of thee technologies that we are working on today. You will learn various concepts, equations and formulas needed in further course. We will also cover numerous experiemnts like the double-slit, Stern Gerlach, Schrodingers cat and more. We will discuss randomness and probability density, calculating expectation values, polarization & spin, normalization, orthogonility and orthonormal conditions, Bloch sphere, computational basis, basis conversion and more. We will discuss in details the principles of superposition, entanglement, coherence/decoherence, Interference/noise and the observer/observed effect. We will also cover wavefunctions and their variations, Eular's form, Hamiltonians, hermitians and various different types of operators.
Outcome: You will be equipped with the theory and concepts to understand physics behind these quantum technologies and would have learned all major equations.
Module 2: Mathematics for quantum computing - This module will review high school mathematical concepts of complex numbers, matrices, calculus, linear algebra and will then include various mathematical examples and exercises using Dirac notation (Bra-Ket notation), computational basis, qubits, wavefunctions, probability amplitudes, eigenvectors, eigenvalues, scalar Vs tensor products & more. We will then cover entanglement and Bell (EPR) pairs and calculations using them. This will also cover advanced quantum operators like the ladder operators, projectors and more. Numerous examples will be covered in the class and participants will get the chance to solve them live and at home.
Outcome: At the end of the module you will be equipped with the mathematical concepts required to execute quantum computations.
Module 3: Foundations of Quantum sensing - This module will introduce various types of quantum sensors like SQUIDs (superconducting), OPMs (Magnetometers), Diamond NV centre, gravimeters and more, and explain the underlying principles on which they work. The concepts of beam-splitter, Interferrometer, spectroscopy, homodyne detection, quadrature sqeezing and many more will be introduced that helps these quantum sensors to operate.
Outcome: This module will give you knowledge behind various quantum sensors and how they work.
Module 4: Quantum gates, quantum circuits & quantum error correction - This module will detail out all the quantum gates (Pauli gates, Hadamard, CNOT, SWAP, rotation and more) and how they form quantum circuits and used for various measurements. How the hadamard & CNOT gate creates entanglement, quantum phase estimation algorithm, no cloning theorum, superdense coding and quantum teleportation. Will also introduce quantum fourier transform, quantum error correction and how it’s done. We will do Live excercises in the class & lab sesssions where we will perform hands-on programming with IBMs Qiskit.
Outcome: You will be fluent in quantum computing, both with mathematical calculations and with Qiskit programming (designing circuits, SVC's, measuments and more).
Module 5: Quantum algorithms - This module will cover various quantum algorithms like Grover, Shor, Deutsch–Jozsa algorithm and more. hands-on programming with IBMs Qiskit. It will also introduce advanced quantum algorithms like VQEs, QAOA, QUBO and more.
Outcome: You will be able to implement these algorithms in Qiskit and run your own programs.
Module 6: Applications of quantum computing & quantum sensing - This module will cover how various quantum sensors are used in modern applications like medical imaging, precision measurements, guiding systems, and even for dark matter detection and changes in gravitational fields. Also we will discuss various potential applications of quantum computing like optimizations, annealing process and more.
Outcome: You will be equipped with the knwoeledge of present applications of quantum technologies, how they can be combined and what you can further do with them.
Module 7: Project - This will include writing a PHD application-level research proposal on a topic of either quantum computing or quantum sening. The format and research methods will be explained and how to perform and cite literature review. Various topics will be given, though you can choose one of your own related to latest researches in quantum computing or quantum sensing.
There will be exercises at the end of each module. These will build strong basics in various concepts. At the end of this program, you will have strong foundational knowledge to apply for the advanced programs and internships/jobs in quantum technologies.
[Note: The mentioned topics are indicative and subject to minor changes during the course of the programme. The actual topics coverage will be more vast then mentioned here.]
